Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 96 minutes, in Swedish with English subtitles
In the 100th anniversary year of director Ingmar Bergman’s birth, we present a gorgeously restored version of The Seventh Seal, one of the most influential films of all time. A pensive knight, Antonius Block (Max Von Sydnow), returns after fighting in the Crusades. He encounters Death, who comes to claim him. By challenging Death to a game of chess, he forestalls his demise – he wishes to perform at least one meaningful deed before he dies. As the chess game progresses at various points along his journey, the knight and his squire encounter a group of players. The Seventh Seal is a stunning story of man’s search for meaning and a work of stark visual poetry. Beautifully shot, ultimately life affirming, iconic and timeless. Not only highly impressive but thought-provoking, relevant and intensely moving in our present times.
