Einar (Robert Redford), a stoic former rancher who developed a serious drinking problem, quietly lives in the rugged Wyoming ranchlands  alongside his only trusted friend, Mitch Bradley (Morgan Freeman), a  one-time cowhand who never fully recovered after being mauled by a bear.
